The Chesapeake Energy Center is located between Route 13 and I-64 on the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River in the City of Chesapeake. The station has one coal combustion residuals (CCR) surface impoundment that managed sluiced or wet CCR from the station as part of the wastewater treatment system.  The station also has an industrial landfill that accepted dry coal ash from the station for disposal.  The impoundment and landfill were built over an area where historical coal ash was also placed prior to the construction of the landfill. The impoundment at this facility (also known as the bottom ash pond) is subject to the EPA CCR Rule and the landfill, historical area, and the impoundment are subject to the requirements of the Virginia Waste Management Act.

The facility is currently developing plans for closure by removal of ash from the landfill, historical area, and impoundment.
