Petroleum tank leaks and spills can occur from tanks of all sizes, aboveground and underground. Even petroleum storage tanks that are designed and equipped to prevent leaks and spills can leak. Petroleum spills can also come from non-tank sources, such as vehicle crashes or train derailments. DEQ’s petroleum tank cleanup program provides oversight to hundreds of petroleum cleanups each year and ensures that human health and Virginia’s natural resources are protected from the impacts of petroleum spills.

When petroleum storage tank leaks or other spills occur, DEQ works closely with tank owners and their environmental consultants to contain the release, assess the extent of contamination and clean it up. In Virginia, cleanups are risk-based. DEQ looks at the likelihood of the petroleum impacting a “receptor,” such as a building, stream or drinking water well, when deciding how much and what kind of cleanup is needed.
