Virginia DEQ
Home MenuAir Quality Planning
Throughout the state, air quality has improved dramatically in recent years. This is in large part a result of DEQ’s work measuring, modeling and controlling the sources of pollution, from large factories to individual cars.
DEQ ensures Virginia's air quality meets established standards by limiting how much certain pollutants can be emitted into the air. This is achieved by managing a pollutant emissions inventory program and monitoring air quality throughout the state.
DEQ also implements special programs – covered in the State Implementation Plan – to reduce emissions. Based on DEQ’s air monitoring data, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency designates “nonattainment” and “attainment” areas in Virginia.
Nonattainment areas have air pollution levels that exceed the federal standard of air quality. When this occurs, DEQ must submit state implementation plans to EPA, outlining programs that will improve their air quality. Attainment areas meet the federal standard, but some are required to adhere to an EPA-approved maintenance plan and work continuously to keep pollution below the standard.
To ensure air quality continues to improve, DEQ coordinates air quality and transportation planning activities, air permit emissions and fees, and provides technical support and analyses to make sure plans for clean air are attainable.
