Recycling and preventing litter are two ways in which DEQ supports a cleaner Virginia. Reducing, reusing and recycling can help you, your community, and the environment by saving money, energy and,of course, our natural resources.

DEQ works with Virginia citizens, local governments, litter prevention program managers and environmental groups on improving awareness of recycling programs and also how litter damages the environment.

DEQ promotes the responsible management of electronics waste in accordance with federal and state regulations. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has initiated a number of programs and promotions to raise public awareness on the need to properly manage reuse, re-manufacturing or recycling systems instead of disposing of these materials.

Improperly managed electronic materials may release hazardous materials -- such as lead, mercury and hexavalent chromium -- into the environment. Many manufacturers have set up take-back programs or funded regional collection programs to facilitate the recovery and proper management of their products.

Many common products that we use in our daily lives contain potentially hazardous ingredients and require special care when disposed. Chemicals in illegally or improperly disposed hazardous waste can be released into the environment and contaminate our air, water and possibly the food we eat.
